Case Study: Microsoft MACH


Orientation is a program of introduction for newcomers. Typically it consists of going over the rules, expectations, culture and other basics. Onboarding, on the other hand is much more involved. It is a process through which new employees are taught and integrates them into the culture of a company. With the latter option, new employees are able to effectively and smoothly join the company avoiding many issues that may stem from different culture and expectations.
Onboarding, while expensive and time-consuming offers many benefits. First off it allows more time to assess the future employee and offer them a job that fits him or her better than the position they were applying for. It also can give them a taste of their future job, fully preparing them to take the role on once they join the company proper. The company invests into its employees.
